ABOUT US

The duo met in 2010. The duo in interested by the art of sound in movement and by the phenomenon of projection. Their music offers a plastic intensity which disorientates and obliges the commitment in a distorted and altered reality. More technically, their music is made of multiple frequencies, pulsations, interferences between different harmonics that creates the particular effect of "beating". Their aim is to let perceive lines and shapes, appearance ans disappearance of vibration. duet creates disorder and confusion : the sound stands still and begins to live inside the one who listens..

It is difficult to classify the music of Split Second. It’s different from the current "classics" of the contemporary music and also from the improvised music. Their music appeals alternately to sound techniques referring to minimalism but also, due to their work on the frequencies, the drone or the feedback, of the electroacoustic music or even rock music. The duet unwinds a sound space combining sharp and low sounds, dense and continuous frequencies which evolve very subtly in time.

Split Second asks the question of the shape in a space and its immediate and global perception. Their music exploits the space in all its directions: depth, height, but also the « invisible « space of silence.

SPLIT SECOND +

The duo has worked in trio with Stefano Canapa who works with 16 mm prepared projectors. The musicians and the projectionist elaborate a dialogue of complementary and energetic propositions, cross their voices and their inspirations, through an experimental protocol made of projector - manipulations, pieces of black and white films.

In future project, Split Second would like also to invite Stephan Krieger. More than a professional sound engineer, Stephan Krieger is a mixing artist, he has been involved with mixing since the early 1990s and has exceptional mixing skills. The trio would like to work with the phenomenon of binaural tones through the use of specific microphones and multipoint sound distribution systems.

Through sound projection and localization, the trio would investigate the sense of hearing.

RESEARCH INCLUDES :

- Moving microphones and electronic phase manipulation as well as filtering

- Extraction of instrument specific envelopes (pitch, volume...) Which could then be used to modulate other sounds or parameters

- Searching for ways to obtain a precise phantom image/sound comprised of beating and harmonic distortion of timbres
